Siobhan’s fundraising story: The Great Scottish Run
Siobhan and her husband experienced a missed miscarriage before the birth of their two sons. When they decided to try again in 2024, they then went through a chemical pregnancy and an anembryonic pregnancy. Siobhan decided to take part in the Great Scottish Run to fundraise for us, having used our resources and support throughout her journey.
I have used the Miscarriage Association resources during all of the instances mentioned in my story and have found them incredibly informative and helpful. I found the discussion forums very supportive and it was good to know I wasn’t alone.
My husband and I always knew we wanted kids and were overjoyed when we got a positive pregnancy test in 2018, just after our wedding. We booked an early private scan to be able to make our announcement at Christmas. We were devastated when we were diagnosed with a missed miscarriage at the scan.
We then went on to have two happy, healthy boys in 2019 and 2022.
We decided in 2024 that we would like to expand our family and decided to try and conceive. We got a positive pregnancy test very quickly and were overjoyed! Unfortunately this joy was short lived as it ended in a chemical pregnancy. Just a week after the positive test, I began bleeding. We fell pregnant again the very next cycle which was a big surprise. Again, we booked an early scan. I was experiencing pregnancy symptoms, so assumed all was well. At the scan we were diagnosed with an anembryonic pregnancy and I chose surgery to remove the sac and tissue.
When signing up for the 10k, there was no debate who I would raise funds for. I have used the Miscarriage Association resources during all of the instances mentioned in my story and have found them incredibly informative and helpful. I found the discussion forums very supportive and it was good to know I wasn’t alone. I ran the 10k with my Mum and we completed the race in 1 hour and 5 minutes, raising £500. I was so happy to be able to give back to the Miscarriage Association.
Before my experience I didn’t appreciate how common miscarriage is. It can be a very lonely experience, so I think it’s so important to raise awareness.
