Government support for bereavement leave extension to include miscarriage is a step closer
4th March 2025

The Miscarriage Association is pleased to see a report suggesting that the Government will support extending bereavement leave to include pre-24 week pregnancy loss. This would be a major step forward for those experiencing the heartbreak of pregnancy loss, and a positive outcome for our Leave for Every Loss campaign.
The Guardian reports today (4th March) that the Government intends to lay amendments to the Employment Rights Bill extending parental bereavement leave, when it comes before Parliament next week.
While we are very much encouraged by this development, we await confirmation from the Government itself. The formal vote at the Report Stage of the bill next week will also be crucial in determining whether this change becomes a reality. Additionally, it is essential that we understand the full details of the proposed amendments, as these will guide how the change is implemented and who would benefit.
Vicki Robinson, CEO of the Miscarriage Association, said:
“We are pleased to see the reporting of the potential extension of bereavement leave to include miscarriage in the Employment Rights Bill. This is a significant step forward and represents the amazing efforts of many individuals and our partner organisations advocating for change.
“While this is positive news, we must await official confirmation from the Government and the outcome of next week’s formal vote at the Report Stage of the bill. It’s also essential that we understand the full details of the amendments included, as these will determine how the change will be implemented and support those affected.
“We look forward to further clarity and, if confirmed, are excited that Leave for Every Loss could become a reality, ensuring that those facing the heartbreak of pregnancy loss receive the time they need to grieve and the support they deserve.”
We continue to be committed to advocating for those affected by pregnancy loss and will keep you updated on the outcome of the vote and any further developments.
Thank you for your ongoing support in making Leave for Every Loss a reality.
